Addressing Fibromyalgia’s Pain, Insomnia, Fog, and Fatigue, with Integrative Approaches

A discussion with Deirdre Rawlings, ND, PhD, Marcus Spurlock, MD, and Jerry Rand, MD.

What triggers fibromyalgia for one person may be different for another.  You cannot put all the people who are suffering from  fibromyalgia into the same box.  Everyone is unique in how fibromyalgia manifests for them, even though there are a certain set of symptoms that determine the diagnosis for fibromyalgia, such as the pain trigger points, insomnia, brain fog, severe exhaustion, fatigue, and more.

Fibromyalgia is often accompanied by other disease states such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA), myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME), chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), lupus, and others, though some people develop ‘pure’ fibromyalgia with no such accompanying conditions.  Studies have shown that stress and trauma, be it physical, emotional, metabolic, and even spiritual, often trigger fibromyalgia onset and can act as its underlying cause.

  • A comprehensive treatment plan to manage and alleviate the pain of
    fibromyalgia will be discussed.
  • How to help you and your systems around you (family, friends, coworkers) realize that fibromyalgia is not a “broken arm”, it is a complex illness/disorder that requires treatment in multiple areas to get sufficient recovery.
  • An ultimate goal of treatment is to “Give the body all the tools it needs to repair itself” — what does this mean exactly?
  • Why do many physicians and medical providers not want to treat people with fibromyalgia?
